Uric Acid Crystals

Uric acid crystals, known by some people as gout crystals, are the underlying problem causing gout pain and inflammation. When there is too much uric acid being produced in the body some of it will form hard microscopic crystals which build up in joint areas. They are very sharp, like needles or small pieces of glass. Your body will react to these crystals as foreign material and attempt to remove them. This is what actually causes the pain and swelling, rather than the crystals themselves.

Chronic gout can occur when a person continually has too much of this acid in the body. The ongoing damage caused by the crystals and repeated attacks can cause significant damage to the joints and surrounding tissues. The damage can become permanent. This is why you need to take action against gout rather than just putting up with it.

These crystals, and the body’s reaction to them, make the affected location very sensitive to touch. Try placing even something as light as a blanket on a toe with gout and you will be in pain like you have never experienced. Uric acids levels in the body usually spike at night due to the overall temperature of the body being reduced from what it normally is. This is why an attack will often occur in the middle of the night.

In some cases the acid crystals don’t just stay in the joint areas. They can move into the kidneys where they will create a type of stone that can be very dangerous. It can result in the kidneys not functioning like they should and then toxins are able to build up internally.

Purines are a natural element of the foods we consume. Uric acid comes from high levels of food that have purines in them. The body has to be able to excrete that acid at the same rate it is coming in through urination. If there is excess of these acid that stays in the body though then there will be the formation of urate crystals and gout will occur.

By reducing the amount of food that you consume that has high purines in them; you reduce the formation of uric acid crystals.

Cut down on proteins that come from red meat, change to low fat dairy products, consume healthy carbs, and avoid both breads and alcohol products that contain brewers yeast. There are some foods you would think are good for you but they aren’t. For example too much broccoli or too many mushrooms are going to skyrocket the amount of uric acid in the body and then you are at a risk of crystals forming.

When you take steps to reduce such crystals from forming, you can break free from problems with gout. You want to eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, and you want to avoid excessive amounts of alcohol. These are ways that you will be able to keep your condition from stopping you in your tracks.
